Tyrone’s offense will be good and get even better when fully healthy
When the late Tom Miller was playing for Tyrone in the 1960s, he was one of the last quarterbacks to call his own plays.
As the high school game evolved through the 60s and into the 1970s, coaches became much more tight-fisted in their control of the offense, and the idea of players determining the plays from series to series became a thing of the past.
John Franco is one of those coaches who emerged from playing in the 1970s, and with that background and his own penchant for calling offense, the day may never come when he completely allows a quarterback to call his own plays.
However, if he were ever to allow that freedom, it would be now, during the reign of Miller’s grandson, junior Ashton Walk.
Walk will begin his third season as Tyrone’s quarterback Friday when the Golden Eagles open their season on the road against Clearfield. Based on what he’s done over the last two seasons, it would seem the sky is the limit for Walk and Tyrone’s offense, but the success of both will ultimately come down to two things: the continued growth of the Eagles ever-evolving offensive line and the ability of the team’s top players to regain and/or maintain their health.
