The first half of 2022 was a time of resurgence for Tyrone’s defense.
Through the first five games, the Golden Eagles recorded two shutouts and limited two other teams to single touchdowns. The defense was fast and confident, with players at every position who could hit and get into the backfield.
To look at the backside of the season, it would be easy to conclude that something changed along the way because the numbers were up. Tyrone allowed 28 or more points four times during a 3-3 split of its final six games.
To be fair, the only thing that changed was the level of competition. In the second half of the season, the Eagles played four playoff teams (including eventual District 6 champ Central) and 5A Hollidaysburg. So while the metrics may have soured, the Eagles’ defense remained pretty sharp, and Coach John Franco recognizes that.
