This was supposed to be the year Central came back down to earth.
After winning the District 6 3A championship three straight years, the heavy hitters were gone, or so it seemed. Players like Jeff Honestine, the record-setting quarterback who was named PA’s Mr. Football in 2022, and all of his playmaking classmates, had graduated.
After going 35-6 from 2020 through 2022, it was time for the Dragons to join everyone else back in football reality, where wins don’t come that easy.
The only problem with that is, sometimes hopes don’t jive with reality, and for anyone hoping Central would easily relinquish its stronghold on 3A football in Central Pennsylvania, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon.
The Dragons have opened 2023 2-0, outscoring their first two opponents by a combined 96-6 and putting up numbers almost as impressive as the wild figures they posted weekly in 2022. There’s every reason to believe they’re still the cream of District 6, and they’re hosting Tyrone on Friday in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference East 1 showdown.
