A year ago in Tyrone, Greater Johnstown came out of the gates hot and generated two scoring opportunities early. The Trojans advanced as far as the Golden Eagles’ 19 on their first series and minutes later got a turnover and moved to the 26.
On each occasion Johnstown was turned away on downs, and before long Tyrone’s offense warmed up and quickly put the game out of reach for a 35-0 victory.
For the Trojans, who had at that point lost 32 consecutive games, it was a matter of what-ifs. Had they cashed in those opportunities early, all the momentum would have been on their side, and the outcome could have been very different.
That’s a fact that isn’t lost on Tyrone coach John Franco, who recognizes clearly the way an athletic team like Johnstown can build on the energy provided by big plays and quick starts. It’s the reason Franco spent time this week talking to his team about the importance of seizing the momentum early ahead of the Eagles’ LHAC game against Johnstown Friday at Trojan Stadium.
