Last Time Out: TYRONE – lost to Bishop Guilfoyle Academy 50-37 at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field. After cutting a 14-0 BG lead to 14-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter, Tyrone fell behind 21-7 at halftime after the Marauders scored on a touchdown reception by Hamilton Gates with 29 seconds left in the half. BG ultimately led by as many as 23 (36-13) until the Golden Eagles mounted a comeback on touchdown catches by Trent Adams and Eli Woomer, trimming the lead to 36-29 with 8 minutes left in the game. But a pick-6 by Nick McCloskey and a 48-yard scoring run by Taurean Consiglio sealed the deal for BG, which remained undefeated at 6-0. Huntingdon, meanwhile, fell to Central 30-20 in Roaring Spring. The ‘Cats jumped to a 13-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game after converting a fumble on the Dragons’ first possession into a score and recovering a blocked punt in the endzone. But Central regrouped behind quarterback Eli Muthler and scored 22 straight point to take the lead by the third quarter. Two scores came on the legs of Muthler, who ran for 63 yards. Huntingdon pulled within 2 at 22-20 in the fourth on a run by Landon Erdman, but the Dragons put the game away on a 32-yard run by Braydon Beach with 6 minutes to play.
Series: The series between Tyrone and Huntingdon is one of the first true rivalries to have developed for the Tyrone football program in its 100-year history. After initiating the series in 1922, teams spent much of the late 1930s and early1940s battling for supremacy in the Western Conference. It was a Tyrone win over Huntingdon in 1940 that propelled the Orange and Black in the mythical state championship game against Shenandoah, and it was perceived rough play in 1946 that prompted Tyrone officials to leave the Bearcats off the schedule in 1947, a period when Bellwood-Antis surpassed Huntingdon as Tyrone’s top rival. The teams have played four times in the postseason, including back-to-back matchups in the District 6 3A title game in 1986 and 1987. The Bearcats won 6-0 in ’86 before the Golden Eagles avenged the loss and won the program’s first District title in 1987 with a 20-19 win. Huntingdon’s success against Tyrone in the 1980s and 90s, when the ‘Cats won 8 of 10 games at one point, helped them build a substantial lead in the series, but Tyrone narrowed the gap by taking 15 in a row from Huntingdon (including two playoff games) from 2004 through 2016. The Golden Eagles have won 4 straight in the series since 2020 and now trail by a single game all time with 44 wins and 45 losses. Four games have ended in ties.
