Last Time Out: TYRONE – defeated Forest Hills 44-0 in the District 6 3A semifinals at G.H. Miller Memorial Field. In its first shutout of the season, Tyrone’s defense limited the Rangers to 159 yards and forced 5 turnovers, including a pair of interceptions from Trent Adams and a pick-6 by Ashton Emigh. Seth Hoover led an offense that totaled 416 yards with a career-best 249 yards and 4 touchdowns on 23 carries. Ashton Walk completed 8 of 13 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown and never threw a pass in the second half. PENN CAMBRIA – defeated Central 33-0 in Cresson in the District 6 3A semifinals. Thomas Plunkett, Gavin Harrold, and Mason Mento each ran for more than 100 yards and combined for 4 touchdowns. The Panthers led 12 at halftime and added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away. Penn Cambria held the Dragons to 166 yards and intercepted Jesse Muthler three times.
Series: Tyrone and Penn Cambria have faced off six times since 2006, with all of those games coming in the District 6 playoffs. Tyrone won the first four, including a come-from-behind thriller in 2006. The Panthers had built a 30-13 halftime lead after churning out 262 yards in the first half with quarterback Luke Tomaselli rushing for 2 touchdowns and passing for another. But the second half was a different story. Tyrone scored five unanswered touchdowns, including a 92-yard run by Brinton Mingle and a 75-yard return of a fumble by Johnny Franco to win 47-30. After blowout wins in the playoffs in 2010 and 2011, the Eagles defeated the Panthers 20-14 in 2020 on their way to the 3A championship game. Penn Cambria won the last two in 2021 and 2023. Walk threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns to Dravyn Crowell and Andrew Weaver, and Brady Ronan ran for another as the Eagles built a 21-13 lead. Ronan then broke off a 79-yard run in the third to put Tyrone ahead by 9.
But the Panthers rallied in the fourth, scoring on a blocked punt return by Carter McDermott to pull within 28-25 before parlaying a long punt return into a score by Gavin Harrold with just over half a minute to play.
