Series: There was a time when Huntingdon was the top draw on Tyrone’s schedule and the biggest rival the team faced. That was in the early days of football in the borough, when both schools were vying for supremacy in the Western Conference. Throughout the mid-30s and into the 1940s, their matchup frequently determined the conference champ, like in 1940, when Tyrone’s win over the ‘Cats in the season finale propelled it to the Central Pennsylvania High School Football League state championship game, where a 0-0 tie with Shenandoah earned the Eagles a share of a state title.
The series was halted in 1942 over cries of dirty play, and it wouldn’t be renewed on a yearly basis for another 10 seasons.
It’s been a back-and-forth series that has been highly contested even in each school’s heyday. In the early 2000s, for example, when Tyrone was experiencing statewide success on a yearly basis, the Eagles lost to the ‘Cats three times from 2001-2003. In 1998 and 2005, years Huntingdon won the 3A title in District 6, Tyrone defeated the ‘Cats in the regular season.
The teams have also combined for several memorable playoff matchups, including the 1987 District 6 3A championship, which the Eagles won 20-19 at War Vets Field, avenging a loss in the title game the year prior in a game the ‘Cats took 6-0. In 2015, Tyrone defeated Huntingdon 24-21 in the District 6 2A quarterfinals on a last-second kick from Ethan Vipond.
Following the Eagles win last season, the series is tied at 45-45-4.
Last 10 games: Tyrone leads 7-3.
Coaches: TYRONE – John Franco (227-68 in 25 seasons at Tyrone; 288-151-2 overall); Tim Lucko (7-19 in 3 seasons at Huntingdon).
Last Meeting: Ashton Walk ran for two touchdowns and threw for two others in a 32-7 victory over Huntingdon at War Vets Field on Friday, October 4, 2024.
Walk completed 13 of 20 passes for 280 yards as the Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak. Following a blocked punt by Eli Woomer, Walk scrambled for a 19-yard score in the first quarter and later hit Woomer for an 11-yard touchdown that made it 14-0. He would add a 54-yard scoring pass to Trent Adams to lift Tyrone to a 24-7 lead by halftime.
Despite Walk’s offensive flurry, the real story was the defense, which caused 5 turnovers to go along with the blocked kick while limiting the ‘Cats to 153 total yards. Elliott Guisler had Huntingdon’s lone score on a 1-yard reception in the second quarter.
