Last Time Out: TYRONE – defeated Chestnut Ridge 28-13 at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field, using big plays to mitigate the Lions’ effective running game. The Eagles got on the board in the first quarter when Mason Emigh pulled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Eli Woomer, just one play after Woomer had connected with Marshall Martin for a 24-yard gain. After Ridge had tied the game in the second quarter, Brayden Parsons put the Eagles back on top with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Ben Walk. Woomer later put the game out of reach with a 24-yard interception return for a score in the third. Walk completed 6 of 12 passes for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns as part of a passing attack that produced 193 yards. Tyrone’s defense limited the Lions, who had been averaging 174 yards per game on the ground, to 104 rushing yards. Woomer’s pick was the Eagles’ 20th of the season. HUNTINGDON – lost to Richland 42-13, surrendering 446 yards, including 289 off the arm of Rams quarterback Jacob Regan. The sophomore completed 14 of 17 passes and threw for 4 touchdowns. Both Arnold Mugerwa (5-129) and Jamere Christian (7-135) had more than 100 receiving yards, while Grayson Mahla fronted a ground attack that produced 148 yards with 81 yards and a touchdown. The Bearcats managed just 20 yards through the air and could generate just 75 yards on the ground, led by Landon Erdman’s 45 yards on 8 carries.

Series: Tyrone and Huntingdon have played 95 times since beginning their series in 1922, many of those game with high stakes. In 1940, for example, their regular season finale, played on Thanksgiving Day, determined the winner of the Western Conference. The Golden Eagles won 13-0, and went on to tie Shenandoah 0-0 in the CPHSFL championship game.

Decades later, in the mid-1980s, the longtime rivals would meet in the playoffs for the first time. District 6 adopted playoffs in 1985, and by 1986 the Eagles and Bearcats were facing off in the 3A championship game, a contest Huntingdon won 6-0. The next season, they squared off once more in the 3A finals, and this time Tyrone won 20-19, avenging a loss to the ‘Cats from earlier in the season and claiming the first of the program’s 10 District titles.

It would be almost 30 years before the teams would play each other in another postseason game, but when it happened in 2014 Tyrone won 45-15 in the 2A semifinals. The Eagles claimed a quarterfinal game over the ‘Cats the next season, winning 24-21 on a last-second field goal by Ethan Vipond.

Tyrone’s record against the ‘Cats in the postseason stands at 3-1.

Coaches: TYRONE – John Franco (230-69 in 25 seasons at Tyrone; 291-152-2 overall); Tim Lucko (9-21 in 3 seasons at Huntingdon).

Last Meeting: Tyrone ended a two-game losing streak with an offensive explosion against the Bearcats, defeating Huntingdon 41-21 at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field behind 457 yards of total offense.

The Golden Eagles jumped to a 14-0 lead 7 minutes in to the first quarter and led 28-7 by halftime.

Caleb Whitby was the Eagles’ top offensive weapon, carrying the ball 29 times for 200 yards and 4 touchdowns. Eli Woomer completed 12 of 18 passes for 200 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds left in the first half to Dylan Robinson.

Whitby’s last touchdown, a 7-yard run in the third quarter, put Tyrone ahead 35-7.

Landon Erdman fronted Huntingdon with 85 yards and a pair of touchdown on 7 carries, but the ‘Cats turned the ball over twice on interceptions and could manage just 6 passing yards against a defense geared to limit the run.
