The Daily Herald in Tyrone has covered the Tyrone football team from its beginning in 1921 and has produced thousands of articles about the Golden Eagles. This section will provide an online vault of classic articles.

In the two seasons Steve Guthoff coached Tyrone in 2012 and 2013, the Eagles played their best games against Clearfield, but each time they were turned away in heartbreaking fashion. The game in 2013 was a prime example.

Steve Guthoff coached at Tyrone for two seasons in the wake of John Franco’s resignation in 2011. He won 17 games in that time and he had players who did amazing things, but he was never able to secure a signature win. The closest the Eagles came in that time was a 27-26 loss to undefeated Clearfield in 2013, a game in which two major special teams mistakes in the final six minutes spelled disaster for Tyrone.

On paper, it looked like a run-of-the-mill blowout of a conference rival. But in the game within the game, Tyrone’s 2006 win over P-O was a matter of answering back after getting punched in the mouth. Some second-half extra-curriculars set it off, and Tyler Gillmen finished it.

Tyler Gillmen and Johnny Franco each ran for 100 yards and
Tyrone’s defense limited Forest Hills to 231 yards, but this 2006 District 6 semifinal turned in favor of the Eagles thanks to a surprise kickoff return by junior Brandon Gehret.

Bishop McCort coach Ken Salem has said the Crushers modeled their program after the success of Tyrone, and in the 2006 District 6 2A final McCort out-Tyroned Tyrone. The Crushers outgained the Eagles on the ground and came up with more big plays to deal Tyrone its fist championship loss in the Franco era.

Drew Hunter had one year as a starter in 2015, and he used it to accomplish some incredible things, like becoming just the second quarterback in Tyrone history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in one campaign. Record-setting games like the one he had against Huntingdon were a big reason why.

In 2011, Tyrone had featured its most dynamic offense in program history and it steamrolled opponents throughout the District 6 and PIAA playoffs with an array of weapons that could score any way and at any time. But the Eagles could never find their rhythm in the state championship game and it cost them dearly.

Jesse Jones set career rushing records from 1997-2000 that may never be broken, but there was one of Jones’s records James Oliver thought was within his grasp, and that was the single-game mark. Oliver had one chance in the second half of a blowout against BEA to make history, and with that opportunity he stepped into the record books.

In 2014, Jason Wilson became the second rookie coach in Tyrone football history to win a District 6 championship when the Eagles upset Mount Union at Mansion Park. With a running attack that kept the Trojans’ explosive offense off the field, Tyrone secured its 10th District title.
