Friday, September 23, 2022
War Vets Field, Huntingdon
SERIES: The Huntingdon Bearcats are among the oldest rivals on Tyrone’s schedule, with the series dating back to 1922, just the second season of high school football in the borough. It began as a series the Bearcats dominated until the Steve Jacobs era began in the late 1930s.
The Eagles won four in a row against Huntingdon from 1939 through 1942, but it was around then that the ‘Cats opted off Tyrone’s schedule after officials and media in Tyrone complained of dirty play. Huntingdon wouldn’t return to the schedule full-time in 1952.
Huntingdon leads the overall series with 45 wins and 42 losses. Four games have ended in ties.
The teams have met four times in the District 6 playoffs, with Tyrone holding a 3-1 lead in the postseason. Tyrone and Huntingdon split a pair of District 6 3A championship games in 1986 and 1987, with the ‘Cats winning 6-0 in ’86 before losing 20-19 in ’87.
